One Idea to Help You Draw Anime Creatures

By Rick Feathers

Drawing anime creatures is a lot of fun because any doodling on a piece of paper can be a creature. Any bug, animal, reptile, or fish in the sea can be a creative start to your non-human character. The possibilities are endless.

Here is an idea to help you. I was in an interesting restaurant one day called “The Rainforest Café”. While waiting to be seated, we browsed around their store and looked at all the items for sale. There was a table filled with plastic bugs of all kinds, rubber snakes, and sea animals.

I was amazed at how well they were made and how real some of them looked. One in particular grabbed my attention: a dragon fly, 4 inch in length with a wing span of 5 inches and very detailed in all aspects. Yes, I purchased it, and I still have it sitting on top of my computer monitor. It’s my anime bug catcher because it catches other bugs to eat.

What is most interesting about this dragon fly toy is that it’s a 3 dimensional figure I use as a model. Because it is plastic, I can shape it into different positions. And I can hold, turn and twist it into any direction I desire for sketching.

These simple figures are not expensive and will help you create all the anime creatures you can imagine. First learn to draw your anime creatures well. Then experiment by adding a tail if it has none, put wings on animals that have none, or make the legs longer. The possibilities are endless. Anytime you draw something that looks like it could possibly be a creature, put eyes and legs on it and give it an off the wall weird name.
